Peewee MD Gold – Tournament Champions!
Submitted By Josh Hamilton on Wednesday, December 05, 2018
The Brampton 45’s Peewee MD Gold team crossed the border into New York on Thursday, hoping to come back home with a championship trophy.

Participating in the 47th annual Gene Harrington Invitational, the coaches and returning players had unfinished business to attend to.  The team went to the finals last year, only to lose a heart breaker in the Shootout Classic tournament.

Game 1 of the round robin this year saw them play an early Friday game against North Toronto, where they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first 5 minutes, and scored another 2 goals in the first minutes of the 2nd.  Heading into the 3rd period up 4-0, the teams then traded goals, as Brampton earned a solid 5-1 victory.

It was a quick turnaround for their 2nd game at noon, which saw the boys take the ice outdoors at the Buffalo RiverWorks complex.  Facing off against Vaughan JCC (who had also won their first game), the team gave up a goal 46 seconds into the game.  After that point, they battled back to tie the game 1-1 in the 1st, before storming out with 3 goals in the middle period, to head into the 3rd up 4-1, which is how the score ended up as Brampton shut the door the rest of the way.

Brampton finished off the round robin the next day, with a game against the Leaside Flames (yes, another team from the GTA), who needed a victory to stay alive in the tournament, while a 45’s victory would guarantee a spot in the finals.  The boys wanted to earn their way in, as the #1 seed, and opened the scoring early, before trading 1st  period goals to go up 2-1.  After a scoreless 2nd, the boys got another 2 goals in the 3rd, to wrap up the round robin with a convincing 4-1 win.  This game was by far the roughest of the tournament, with both teams taking penalties, and the opposition working to apply pressure on the kids from Brampton, who resisted numerous attempts to get them off their game.

At the conclusion of the round robin, Brampton had a perfect 3-0 record and was the #1 seed, with Vaughan JCC as the #2 seed, which meant a rematch from the outdoor game two days before.  The team, yet again, scored an early goal and added another to end the 1st up 2-0.  It was a spirited contest, with Brampton padding the lead, to go into the final period leading 3-0.  There were several goals to wrap up the game, as the team increased the margin to 5-1 with less than 3 minutes remaining.  Vaughan pulled their goalie, but only managed one goal, as Brampton earned a hard fought 5-2 win.

As the final buzzer sounded, gloves went in the air, sticks were thrown aside, players streamed off the bench, as the team surrounded the goalie in celebration.  Coaches, parents and siblings were cheering on the team, as the Brampton 45’s were crowned Champions of the 2018 Shootout Classic.

Everyone played their hearts out all tournament long, with the team going 4-0 and outscoring their opposition 18-5.  After the handshakes, on ice celebrations, photos and dressing room cheers, the team returned to the lobby and family members, singing their chant “Who are we?  Brampton!  Brampton Who? Brampton Gold!”

Returning back to Canada at the Rainbow Bridge, anything to declare – YES, a Championship Trophy!

Congratulations team!
